Sowing Grass

When to sow grass: Summer and winter are not suitable for sowing seeds. Grass is sown in spring or fall. Autumn is the ideal time. Grass sown in this season is not affected by the heat. As the weather cools down, it does not grow too long and strengthens its roots. It is not invaded by weeds. It is watered abundantly with the fall rains. By spring, it becomes an adult lawn without the need for extra care. There is not much time to prepare the soil in spring. The sudden heat makes the new lawn uncomfortable. Watering and mowing is a lot of work. It is risky to apply herbicides to newly planted grass.

In summer, however, weed seeds rain down from everywhere. They settle in freshly cultivated, fertilized soil. Especially in summer gardens, new lawns can also be crushed and worn out. Roll price is more expensive than sowing grass.

Roll Grass Floor Preparation

Grass grows best in clay, sandy, mixed soils rich in organic matter. If the soil is not suitable, it can be improved with various substances. Heavy clay soils can be amended with river shafts and plenty of organic fertilizer (preferably sheep manure). Sandy soils can also be made to hold water with the addition of farm manure. First, the soil is deeply dug. All construction waste, stones, roots and weeds are completely removed. Weeds can be destroyed with herbicides. However, this is very risky. It may take a long time for the herbicide to take effect. Slightly sloping ground is not a problem.

But bumps and potholes must be completely leveled. This can be done with a rake. Wait a few weeks to allow the soil to anneal. The garden is dug again, but this time with well-crumbled old farmyard manure at the rate of one tin per square meter. It is thoroughly worked until no clods remain. On another side, the burnt manure is sifted. Allow the soil to settle for a few days. Press the soil with a wooden mallet or roller. One day before sowing the grass, the sifted fertilizer is spread on the soil with a thickness of 1-1.5 cm. If the soil is dry, it is watered by sprinkling. The seed is sown the next day.

Sowing grass: The seeds are scattered in a windless weather with an average of 40-50 grams per square meter. In order to distribute the seed evenly, the garden can be divided into certain sections by stretching the rope. Starting from one side of the garden and going backwards. After sowing, the garden is lightly raked. Do not try to bury the seeds. The cultivated area is watered every day in the morning, noon and evening as sprinkling. Seeds germinate in 3-10 days. It is customary to run a roller over the new grass, but this does more harm than good. When the grass is 8-10 cm. it is cut half of its length with a machine with a sharp blade. It is kept a little shorter in later years. New grass should not be mowed too short. Watering is done so that the soil is always moist for a month. To avoid stepping on the new lawn and hurting it while watering, get a long plank of light wood. Stretch it over the lawn and step on it.

Irrigation: Grass can only be planted where there is plenty of water. It should be watered regularly in summer and as needed in other seasons. It would be very good to install an automatic irrigation system in large areas. In small areas, it is watered with a sprayer attached to the end of the hose. Especially new lawns should be watered by lightly sprinkling so that the roots do not deteriorate.
